PHILA-FRANCE 2019 in Montpellier

Near the south coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea lays the city of Montpellier, the capital of the Hérault department in the Occitanie region. They wanted to do better as the 600 frames in the latest national stamp show Paris-Philex 2018 in Paris last year. On PHILA-FRANCE 2019 (7-10 June) they managed to show ca. 800 frames – a big national show with 154 multiframe exhibits, 13 one frame and 9 youth exhibits. All together 43 postal history, 32 thematic philately, 23 open philately, 18 picture postcards, 13 traditional philately and 25 exhibits of 7 smaller classes were present.

Not only thematic philately is still very popular in France: also on this show you could see several new thematic philately exhibits which have never been shown before on a national exhibition. More than 20% of the multiframe exhibits in Montpellier were presented in the thematic philately class (after postal history class with almost 25% of all multiframe exhibits). If you count the pictorial classes all together (thematic, open, picture postcards and also 6 maximaphily), you have 79 of the 154 multiframe exhibits (which makes more than 50% of all exhibits).

24 judges distributed 23 gold medals (but only 1 gold medal in thematic philately class!), 40 large vermeil (only 5 thematic) and 47 vermeil (only 8 thematic). So of the 110 higher medal awards only 14 went to thematic philately exhibits (or a little bit more as 10% in comparison with more than 20% of the exhibits). Some studies of Gunnar Dahlvig (an earlier member of the FIP Thematic Commission) show this trend already many years ago in international FIP exhibitions, but it seems also to happen already in national exhibitions. Not so for the “newer” class open philately, because even 5 of the 23 gold medals went to open philately exhibit! So 20% of the open philately exhibits received a gold medal (and only 1 of 35, included one frame, of the thematic philately exhibits received a gold medal).

Could the better results in open philately explain the fact that some exhibitors switched from thematic to open philately? What makes the open philately exhibits better than the thematic philately exhibits? Is it the rarity of the material (philatelic or non-philatelic)? Is it a better plan and a better development? Is the knowledge of these exhibits better? Maybe a comparison of the evaluation sheets of both classes gives an answer to all these questions.
